Cow postpartum uterine infection: A review of risk factors, prevention and the overall impact

چکیده
Accepted: 02/06/2014 Abstract Several physiological changes occur in the cow’s uterus soon after calving. These changes are significant if a cow is to recover and come back into season, ready to conceive, thus any factors that interfare with the normal functioning of the uterus and other associated structures will affect overall reproductive performance. Research has shown variations in the prevalence of uterine infection between different countries due to several factors such as general environment, nutrition, calving season and breed. Infections such as puerperal metritis and endometritis are often caused by pathogens such as Actinomyces pyogenes, Fusobacterium necroforum and Bacteroides spp, which can cause significant damage to the uterine endometrial tissue. Such infections require prompt diagnosis and attention in order to prevent their detrimental effect. Research has also documented other factors that may contribute to the incidence of infection of the uterus after calving. They include age, parity, poor nutrition, dystocia and retained foetal membranes (RFMs). Prevention of uterine infection should therefore focus on the causal factors, applying the best management practises in order to minimise their overall impact. Further studies into improved genetics focusing on reproductive immunology would be something that is worthwhile in the 21 century.

Prevention of Periprosthetic Joint Infection
Prosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a calamitous complication with high morbidity and substantial cost. The reported incidence is low but it is probably underestimated due to the difficulty in diagnosis. PJI has challenged the orthopaedic community for several years and despite all the advances in this field, it is still a real concern with immense impact on patients, and the healthcare system....

Objective: Ceftiofur, a third-generation cephalosporin, is used as a usual antimicrobial drug in veterinary medicine. Positive efficiency of ceftiofur for treatment of retained fetal membrane (RFM) and acute puerperal metritis has been previously reported. Thus, this study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of ceftiofur hydrochloride (CH) in prevention of uterine postpart...

متن کاملCharacterization of single nucleotide polymorphism in the 5'-untranslated region (5'-UTR) of Lactoferrin gene and its association with reproductive parameters and uterine infection in dairy cattle
Uterine infection is one of the reproductive diseases that can have disturbing postpartum uterine health in cattle. Therefore, identification of resistant genotypes to uterine infection is important. Lactoferrin (LF) is one of the major antimicrobial compounds in the normal uterine discharges of cows. We hypothesized that allelic diversity in LF gene may contribute to susceptibility or resistan...
متن کاملDraft Genome Sequence of Escherichia coli MS499, Isolated from the Infected Uterus of a Postpartum Cow with Metritis
Specific Escherichia coli strains associated with bovine postpartum uterine infection have recently been described. Many recognized virulence factors are absent in these strains; therefore, to define a prototypic strain, we report here the genome sequence of E. coli isolate MS499 from a cow with the postpartum disease metritis.
